I knew I had to give Boy21 a shot despite the fact that I’m not a big basketball person. It took a few chapters, but as soon as the character Boy21, or Russ, which is his real name, was introduced I was hooked. I might even go as far to say that it was one of the GREATEST books I have read this summer.

The book by Matthew Quick is a fast paced 250pg novel that appeals to a variety of readers, and will be a hit to any of your Y.A readers. Sports fiction fans will enjoy it as well as your contemporary realistic fiction readers. You will be able to connect with the three main characters Finley, Erin, and Russ through out this novel with such ease. Russ is such an insanely unique character, and it’s impossible to not love him from the very start. Finley, the narrator, is another one of those characters whose voice and story will stick with you even once the book is over. Friendship through healing, community culture, non-judgmental types of friendship, this book is raw and gritty as it unflinchingly looks at life in inner city Philadelphia and the connections that can grow from it. It will grip you right up until the unexpected conclusion.
